Mattern, Shannon

biography

Shannon Mattern is the Penn Presidential Compact Professor of Media Studies and History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Before that, she served for nearly two decades as a professor of media studies and anthropology at The New School in New York. Her research and teaching focus on media architectures, information infrastructures, and urban technologies. Her books include “The New Downtown Library”(2007); “Deep Mapping the Media City”(2015), “Code and Clay, Data and Dirt: 5000 Years of Urban Media”(2017), and “A City It Not a Computer”(2021). She also contributes a regular long-form column about urban data and mediated infrastructures to “Places Journal”, and she serves as president of the board of the Metropolitan New York Library Council.
