description

The Pech Merle cave is a prehistoric decorated cave located in the Lot department (Occitanie region, France), in the commune of Cabrerets. Explored in the early 20th century, it opens onto a hill (pech in Occitan) overlooking the Sagne and Célé valleys in the Quercy region. Pech Merle is one of the few major Palaeolithic caves still open to the public. It features 700 painted or engraved motifs, including 69 animal figures, 13 human or para-human figures and 595 signs. Like others, this cave has been compared to the Sistine Chapel, a comparison attributed to Abbé Breuil.
